When the alarm went off at 5am this morning, I squinted in the general direction of my window and saw raindrops. My first word this morning was: O'hellno. As in, there's no way I'm riding at 5:15am, in the dark, on wet roads and on wet leaves through the park. Despite wanting to just turn off the alarm and sleep another two hours, I managed to talk myself out of bed to investigate further. Upon opening the window, I realized the roads outside my house were mostly dry and the temps were warm. I cursed myself for being investigative and proceeded to pull my act together for another morning ride.
The road leading out of my neighborhood and down to the park is lit - sporadically but just enough. No real worries there except for the stray cat or a new pothole. It's a whole 'nother ball game once I get into the park. There are lights here and there for the first half mile, then nothing, then one or two random lights in the second mile. After that, it's pitch-dark. Under the canopy of trees, moonlight doesn't even shine through. (hence the need for the aforementioned magicshine, which can't come soon enough!).
Today was extra special because the leaves are making a mass exodus from their respective trees and papering the entire path. I couldn't make out where the path was vs the gravel on the side vs the darn forest. If I had a heart rate monitor on, I'm certain some of my highest spikes of the morning were during the time I was trying to ride through the park. If anyone could've seen my thought-bubbles, the dominant theme would be: this is just ridiculous.
Alls well that ends well, I guess - I made it to the ride with a minute or two to spare, everyone was pretty civilized as we traversed the dark and wet roads and I had the chance to play with the big boys a couple of times. At work now and trying to refrain from falling asleep on my keyboard and/or devouring anything in sight.
Speaking of ridiculous - this is a great article on CNN (re: our broken government) that I happened upon a couple days ago. I tweeted it (I don't tweet much so that's big for me!) but thought it was worth posting on here as well.
Happy Thursday - It's almost Friday!!
